Lettuce is on my weekly grocery list. It's also probably the number one item of produce that is wasted because it spoils before we can use it all. We can usually get a taco dinner, a handful of sandwiches out of a head before it starts to turn brown and wilt. It rarely lasts more than a week.
So on a grocery shopping trip over a month ago, we stopped in produce and shocked to see that a head of Dole ice burg lettuce was $1.49! WTH?! Of course, being the cheapskate I am said "No, I'll get it at Aldi later."
But my eyes fell on a sign that said "Organic Lettuce 99c." I did a double take because Organic is rarely cheaper, and didn't think twice of buying it.
I got home and was putting it away when I realized the root was still attached. Interesting.
Then I read the label, "Store Living Lettuce in the refrigerator in the eco friendly package."
"De-Leaf Living Lettuce by gently hand-removing each leaf from the root, rinse and dry in colander."
"Use only what you need for each serving, keep root intact."
Umm Okay. I honestly have never encountered Living Lettuce before so I fought the urge to remove it from it's container and put it in the lettuce container I already owned, which would require cutting the root off.
So fast forward to a month later. NOT ONLY DO WE STILL HAVE IT, IT'S STILL FRESH!!!
I bought a new head today for $2.49 because we finally needed more. It's worth every penny and it's seriously the best looking and best tasting iceberg lettuce I have ever seen.
To think I have been throwing way half a head a lettuce a week because it goes bad so quickly!
This is definitely a product I wish I had known about sooner!
So look for Tanimura and Antle Living Lettuce in your produce section. If they don't have it, ask for it!
BTW. I found it at Meijer.
